First licensed in 1970 while still at school, Steve has been an active DXer and contester for over 30 years. In 1978 his work took him to Iran, where he first experienced the thrill of the pile-up as EP2SL. He was the last-remaining active amateur in Tehran after the fall of the Shah in February 1979.
In the 1980s he lived for several years in Sweden, where he was active as G4JVG/SM0 and as OH0/G4JVG. During this period, he took part in two DXpeditions to Market Reef, OJ0.
Between 1991 and 1994 he worked in Papua New Guinea, from where he made some 45,000 QSOs as P29DX (and P20A in contests). While living in the area he took the opportunity to visit many of the countries in Oceania and was active from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Niue and Vanuatu as well as the 1993 Mellish Reef DXpedition.
